May 6, 2008 - USCIS announced today improvements to
the E-Verify employment authorization program in an effort
to reduce the mismatch rate and increase the effectiveness
of the overall program. Starting today, the E-Verify system
will include naturalization data that will instantly confirm
the citizenship status of naturalized U.S. citizens hired
by E-Verify employers. Naturalized citizens who have not updated
their records with the Social Security Administration (SSA)
are currently the largest category of work authorized persons
who face a mismatch in E-Verify. A naturalized citizen who
faces a mismatch can now call USCIS directly to resolve the
issue.
E-Verify will also include real time arrival data from the
Integrated Border Inspection System. This will reduce the
number of immigration status mismatches for newly arriving
workers who have entered the United States legally. USCIS
also plans to initiate status records information sharing
with the SSA to prevent nonconfirmations from occurring.
Currently, more than 64,000 employers participate in E-Verify
with more than 1,000 new enrollments weekly. E-Verify allows
participating employers to electronically verify the employment
eligibility for newly hired employees.
