USCIS Announces Increased Filing Fees Beginning April 30, 2004

April 15, 2004 - USCIS today published a new schedule of filing fees for all applications. According to the USCIS, "The new fee structure will become effective on April 30, 2004; 15 days after publication. The new fees add an average of $55 to the current cost of immigration benefit applications, and increases the biometrics fee by $20 for certain applications."

BAL Comment: During the public comment period there were objections to the proposed increases, in that they are not geared to improve services but rather only to fund activities that ought to be funded by appropriations, not user fees. Many of those who use the programs would pay higher filing fees for excellent service and quick turn-around, but unfortunately this is not the object of the increases.
