| On December
13, 2001, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved two bills, H.R.
2277 and H.R. 2278, which would provide work authorization for spouses
of E (treaty trader or treaty investor) and L (intracompany transferee)
visa holders respectively.
H.R. 2278 would also reduce the period of time that the L applicant
must be employed by the sponsoring company from one year to six
months if the company has filed a blanket L petition and met the
requirements for expedited processing.
The House of Representatives passed these bills in early September
of this year. Approval by the Senate Judiciary Committee advances
the bills to a final vote of the full Senate. Since the bills were
already adopted by the House, passage by the Senate sets the stage
for the President to sign them into law. The President's approval
is expected.
